This is one of the cinnamon rolls that comes from Royal's Bakery & Deli that we got from Jupiter House in Denton, Tx. These cinnamon rolls are the most awesome things ever, even though Barroni has her doubts. Her doubts, though, come from the fact that she got this roll second hand, and not straight from the warm and gooey source of Royal's.
Royal's Bakery & Deli is located a little off the corner of Carrol and University in Denton, right next to that doughnut place called "Donut". It doesn't look like much on the outside, but inside is country-chic and family friendly. The best part is the huge baking table where you can watch these rolls get made.
Let me tell you a bit about these rolls, because I had the pleasure of watching them make these one morning when I rolled in early on my way to work. There are only three things you need to know about them:
1. These rolls are made fresh every two batches. One batch makes about two dozen rolls, so they're made fresh pretty regularly. If Royal's runs out, they make more right in front of you; the bar seating next to the till allows you to watch!
2. Instead of using the less flavorful but cheaper white sugar, Royal's recipe calls for brown sugar, which preserves moistness, flavor, and bonds to the cinnamon better.
3. ALL THE BUTTER!! They use a lot of butter in this recipe, from the batter to the cinnamon mixture to the icing (which is also homemade, btw). ALL THE BUTTER!
